04 ON THE DAY
Once the hard work of arranging the trip is complete you and your pupils can enjoy the day out. This is a short-list of ideas to help events go smoothly:
Ensure you have a confirmation letter and check date, theme and times.- Check the coach driver knows where you are going and where the drop off / collection point is.
- Ensure you have a mobile phone and telephone number of the centre with you in case of any delays in your journey.
- You should know from the booking details whether you will need to pay any balance on the day. Ensure you have the means to do this.
- Some of the activities at science centres will require your party to be split into groups (this should be outlined clearly on your booking confirmation). Arrange the groups and group leaders before you arrive.
- When you arrive it's best to check the visit details with staff before you let the children leave the coach. Some centres like to give a short briefing to the children before they enter the building.
- If the science centre doesn't give a briefing it might be useful to quickly give one yourself. Remind the children how the day will be organised and how they will know when they are to take part in any special activities or see a science show. Explain what to do with coats and bags during the visit and tell them about any special arrangements for visiting the gift shop.
- Now for the most important bit - let the children explore the exhibition!
- See a show or take part in special workshops.
-
Some centres have trail cards which provide the children with a themed activity. This helps to focus the visit more on your chosen topic. Collect these up afterwards so they can be used back in the classroom as a reminder of the day's activities.
