HOW TO ENGAGE PRIMARY PUPILS IN DISCUSSIONS ABOUT SCIENTIFIC ISSUES

WHY MIGHT TEACHERS USE THESE ACTIVITIES?

  • The curriculum – new curricula in Scotland, England, Northern Ireland, and Wales have statements asking teachers to raise scientific issues.
  • Motivation – when teachers give lessons where issues are raised many pupils are very motivated and respond well.
  • Science in everyday life – the issues in science are often the ways in which science impacts on society and young people need to be in positions to make informed choices about topical issues.
