The Personal Capabilities Programme, born in 1999, encourages opportunities for pupils to develop a range of generic personal skills and capabilities, such as teamwork, self management, creativity, communication, problem solving, tenacity and a positive self image. Teachers use different strategies to develop pupils’ knowledge and understanding of the capabilities, which are then made explicit and infused into the teaching and learning of science and other subjects. Pupils actively self and peer review using verbal, visual and written forms of self and peer assessment.
Based at Sheffield Hallam University, The Centre for Science Education is one of the UK's leading university group in school science education curriculum development and training. We manage national and international research and development projects aimed at developing the scientific capability of young people, and science teachers’ skills to support this development.
