Getting started

Getting started

You need to start with a meeting of those helping. At this, you can decide:

  • who the club members will be (one year group, open access etc),
  • when and where your club will run
  • the programme for the first term or half-term
  • who will lead and prepare for each session
  • what letters and documents you need to produce.

Note - there are advantages and disadvantages with sharing the club programme with the children and their parents.

Advantages Disadvantages
  • It is useful if you need them to bring in anything (eg rocks, leaves etc)
  • It can create a sense of anticipation
  • It lets parents know what you will be covering, and can help them to feel involved
  • You might disappoint the children if you have to change topic at short notice
  • Some children are more excited about ‘a surprise’ so turn up more regularly if they don’t know what they’ll be doing.

We’ve collected together some sample documents, based on those used by schools and other organisations running science clubs.

Sample documents for you to use

Did you choose to skip past "A typical club session"? If so, you can go back there now.
