Symbols

During the development of this scheme of work it became clear that a large number of science specific symbols were not available to us.  As a result, the project team has suggested a number of designs for many of these symbols.

The Widgit company is currently working with us to provide a more comprehensive range.

These are some of the ways that we felt the symbols could be used:

• as a resource list for lesson planning
  

• as cues for more able pupils e.g. to discuss what equipment might be needed or what to do, or as a prompt to actually go and get the equipment needed
  

• as labels for equipment being used in activity
  

• as a pictorial aid for recording an activity - pupils stick symbols on to a pre-prepared recording sheet, or print them off their computer first
