The Trust and its Work

The Trust and its Work To date the AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust has funded 37 innovative projects focused on enhancing the teaching of science in primary schools. 12 new projects have just received funding – this includes new Key Stage 3 projects. This year's funding applications have now been completed. Any new information about future funding will be placed on this site when it is available.

Summary of achievements so far:

Raising scientific achievement of pupils in the participating schools:

Example 1: NIAS Project
Twenty one primary and infant schools in South West Northamptonshire (September 1997 - September 1999). "Over the two-year period the percentage of pupils gaining Level 4 and above in Key Stage 2 increased by 7% to 89%, nearly 10% greater than the county average." (Evaluation Report, October 1999)

Example 2: Liverpool John Moores University Project
Twenty Merseyside primary schools were involved in the project (September 1997 - September 1999). "Results from the Year 6 SATs tests indicate that children in the project schools who typically have below average SAT scores achieved levels of science high than the national average. (Interim Report, May 2000)

Promoting the teaching of scientific enquiry and raising investigative abilities in science;

  1. Raising the profile of science in the participating schools;

  2. Increasing knowledge and understanding of science and their confidence in teaching science;

  3. Contributing to a culture of school improvement in the participating schools;

  4. Improving the effectiveness and confidence of science co-ordinators as subject leaders;

  5. Contributing to greater co-operation and sharing between the participating schools.

How was the Trust formed?

The AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust was created by trust deed in April 1997.

What is the Trust's objective?

The objective of the Trust is to help improve in Britain the education of children and young people in science.

What is the Trust's charitable status?
The Trust was registered as a charity by the Charity Commission for England and Wales in October 1997 with registered number 1064864 and registered office at 15 Stanhope Gate, London, W1Y 6LN.

Who funds the Trust's activities?

AstraZeneca PLC (formerly named AstraZeneca Group PLC) has endowed the Trust with funding of £20 million although the Trust may accept donations from elsewhere. The fund is managed by investment managers on behalf of the Trustees. The intention is to preserve the capital sum for perpetuity and make available the annual income for the purposes of the Trust.

Professor Hugh Lawlor is the Director of the Trust and is responsible for its executive management. Mrs Jean Smith is the Administrator of the Trust.

The Forum brings together the business and education communities in England with the policymakers in an attempt to build consensus around key science education policies and practices.
