See / Visualize

Guidance for teachers - Part B

Although this 'See' stage does require an investment of time it is vital as it is during the visualization process that children are really being challenged to think, problem solve and develop ownership of their own learning. We have found that the best understanding occurs when children are encouraged to flip back and forth between their Brainwaves and See sections of their Thinking Frame to improve the quality of explanation offered by their labelled drawings.

As they do this it is helpful to check that the drawings are still focussed upon answering the original question posed.

brainwave see Interacting with the children during the 'Brainwave - See' process offers an excellent vehicle for what we have termed "Interactive Assessment" but has been recently categorized as "Diagnostic Assessment" by Prof Robin Millar et al in the Evidence-based Practice in Science Education (EPSE) research network (see www.york.ac.uk/depts/educ/projs/EPSE.html)

Older primary and secondary children can then be encouraged to use the Levels Mountain to level their ideas to check that they have sufficient detail and understanding prior to engaging in forming a written explanation (see the video clips in the examples of pupils' work section)
