‘I can explain!’

‘I can explain!’

Project Diary

  • The project involved twenty teachers (science subject leaders and teachers of year 2 and year 3) from ten infant, junior or primary schools in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. The teachers received training in developing the skills of effective group talk as well as using group talk as a teaching and learning strategy in science. They have been supported in designing CPD for delivery in their own schools.

  • All participating teachers have had training in developing effective group talk and are currently trialling this in their classrooms. The teachers have made links with their colleagues in opposite key stages and are building on these to improve KS1/2 transition. The science talk resources and lesson pack are being created. These will be introduced to the teachers after Easter. At this second training day teachers will also work on developing INSET for delivery in their own schools.

Project Summary

The focus of this project is to develop the scientific literacy of children in year 2 and year 3.  One of the key outcomes of the Talking Science project was that for argument to be a truly effective teaching strategy for science in year 6, children need to start practising using the language of argument at an earlier stage.  This project will create training materials and resources for teachers to enable children to engage with the language of science and learn to explain their ideas; hence the title: ‘I can explain!’
