Let's Talk
Introduction
This CPDU has been produced by Marjorie Smith from ‘Science and Plants for Schools’ (SAPS). The CPDU is based on a project called ‘Let’s Talk’ which has been supported by the Wellcome Trust’s ‘Engaging Science’ grants scheme.
'Let's Talk' is a series of activities designed to encourage young people to:
- Evaluate environmental and scientific issues.
- Make informed choices and decisions.
- Learn independently and as part of a group.
- Work in partnership and in teams.
Evaluation
An independent evaluation of the package has been carried out.
These are some of the evaluators comments:
- "All of the materials have been carefully thought-out and produced in a very attractive and, more importantly, a stimulating manner".
- "The packages have achieved their principal aim, stimulating effective discussion on topical scientific issues. It is clear from a variety of sources that pupils who normally contribute little in class have been motivated by these packages".
- "Pupils clearly felt that the exercises gave them a forum for discussion where their views could be safely expressed – there were not necessarily any right or wrong answers".
- "The packages have demonstrated how alternative teaching strategies can be used successfully in science lessons".
- "Materials have been produced which are highly valued and will be used again by the original participants to the trial and colleagues within their institutions".
- "The materials are of great value to the broader curriculum, developing literacy skills in particular".
